In recent years he has had considerable success and recognition, been embraced warmly by the European Art Scene, exhibiting widely in both public and private sectors, notably in France, Spain, England, Italy and Ireland, as well as other European countries. Winter 2003 he was invited to participate in the Florence Biennale, where he won the award “Lorenzo el Magnifico of the city of Florence” for his artistic career, in front of some 890 artists from around the world. In 2005, he participated in the Biennale de Basse Navarre, and was invited to exhibit work permanently in a new Contemporary Art Museum in Casoria, Naples. Works by him are also in the collections of various other museums, art institutions and other public spaces. Last year, 2006, he was listed in the Spanish national newspaper, “El Mundo” in their supplement of the “500 most influential Spanish people, 2006″, under the Arts section, alongside seven other artists, including such names as Tapies. He started his academic studies with classes at the “Circulo de Bellas Artes” in Madrid, finishing studying at the “Ecole de Montparnasse d’Art et Dessin” in Paris in 1978-79. Genius or con, the spectrum of opinion on the life and work of this New Zealand born maverick is infinite. Born Barry Bates in New Zealand in the 1930s Billy Apple studied at the Royal College of Art in London before re-branding himself Billy Apple a living work of art in 1962. Billy moved to New York in the mid-60s where he took part in a ground breaking Pop Art exhibition which featured Roy Lichenstein, Claus Oldenburg and Andy Warhol. He went on to run his own gallery, Apple, one of a handful of artist run spaces in Manhattan that was part of the emerging conceptual art scene. Billys art and life were extreme. When he ceased to be Barry Bates he cut off all contact with his family in New Zealand. As a living artwork everything he did was classified as art including works like Window Cleaning and Floor Scrubbing. Billy continually pushed the boundaries of what it meant to be an artist. Billy Apple has sparked outrage and incredulity, inspiration and awe. His works are held by some of the worlds most important galleries including the Guggenheim and The Tate. He never shuns controversy and lives every minute of his life as an artwork. Being Billy Apple isnt always easy, for him or those around him. It is, however, a fascinating journey from Pop Artist to Brand, with no shortage of heartache and humour along the way.

We are celebrating our 500th episode! With an anniversary post that is, for a change, not a report on an art opening or an interview with a dealer or an artist. Rather, this video, entitled “500″ is a retrospective view on the last year and a half of VernissageTV. This video is also available as DVD. Press Release available at OpenPR: English / German. www.vernissage.tv “500″ recalls moments with artists, such as Robert Rauschenberg, fair directors, such as Samuel Keller, curators, such as Bice Curiger, designers, such as Konstantin Grcic, and architects, such as Zaha Hadid; scenes from exhibitions, private views and events, such as the Jeff Wall retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the opening of the Art Basel Miami Beach, or the after-show party of the Jonathan Meese exhibition at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg. This video brings the viewer to the Art Positions containers on the beach of Miami, to the art hangar of Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz, and finally, to a dash down the metallic slide created by Carsten Höller at the Tate Modern in London. James Kalm slides through this exhibition just before closing time to bring viewers a glance at works by one of todays most influential bad painters. Robert Williams has been a presence on the West Coast art scene for decades. He came to my attention while I was still in high school as the artistic director of Ed Big Daddy Roths studio. There after, he teamed up with the likes of Robert Crumb and S. Clay Wilson as a contributor to the iconic Zap Comix. In 1979 he birthed and became the Godfather of lowbrow and, in 1994 founded JUXTAPOZ Magazine. His aesthetic encompasses Hotrod and surf culture the seamy side of Hollywood grudge, punk, hipster, slacker, and scuzz, the epitome of current bad taste.

“MIRTH” at RISD by Jonathan Bonner

The last placement of a piece of public art on the Rhode Island School of Design campus was in 1968. Taped between August 2006 and June 2007, this documentary captures a truly historic event in the Rhode Island art scene, the creation and installation of a modern art sculpture at the prestigious Museum of Art at The Rhode Island School of Design. Nationally renowned sculptor Jonathan Bonner created this elegant and powerful sculpture of Bethel White granite entitled “Mirth” employing the vast knowledge and skill of Jack Afonso and Tony Costa from Riverside Stone in Seekonk, MA. Bonner’s fabulous addition to public art will be enjoyed for generations to come.

Excerpt from Mr. Hoover and I by Emile de Antonio, writer, director and producer of documentary films, usually detailing political or social events circa 1960s – 1980s. He was born in 1919 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He attended Harvard with John F. Kennedy and would later go on to make a film about Kennedy’s assassination called Rush to Judgment. After serving in the military during World War II, de Antonio frequented the art crowd, often associating with such Pop artists as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol, in whose film Drink de Antonio appears. De Antonio chronicled this art scene in his documentary Painters Painting (1972). In 1959 de Antonio developed G-String Productions in order to distribute the Beat Generation film Pull My Daisy. It was at this time that de Antonio discovered filmmaking. His first film, Point of Order, a compilation film made in 1964, regards Joseph mccarthy and the Army-mccarthy hearings. De Antonio went on to make many politically motivated films that attracted a substantial amount of controversy and also tended to align himself with Marxist thought. Most, if not all, of his films criticize aspects of American culture or politics or reflect a certain degree of political dissension, because of which, along with his Marxist affiliation, the FBI documented 10000 pages of de Antonio’s activities.
